Personalized Memory Care: An Interview with Elizabeth Wright of The Moments
When it comes to memory care, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. At The Moments, personalization is the foundation of everything we do. In this candid interview, Founder and Executive Director Elizabeth Wright shares how her team tailors every aspect of care, from routines and social preferences to medical support and family involvement.
Understanding Each Resident’s Story
“Just because we get older or have dementia doesn’t mean our routines stop mattering.”
That belief drives the care planning process at The Moments. When a new resident moves in, the team conducts both medical and social assessments. More importantly, they spend time with the resident’s family to learn about the individual’s past routines, preferences, and quirks.
“If Don was a farmer who got up at 4:30 AM, had a coffee but skipped breakfast, then showered before dinner, that’s the routine we want to honor,” Elizabeth explains. “We tailor care around their life, not the other way around.”
From bedtime habits to favorite activities like puzzles or bingo, even gardening, the goal is to preserve each resident’s sense of self and normalcy.

Clinical Care with a Human Touch
While clinical and medical needs are a top priority, Elizabeth stresses that true memory care goes beyond medicine.
“The clinical part is important,” she says, “but we also have to engage residents socially so they don’t feel like they’re living in a hospital.”
Whether it’s movie time or getting involved in group activities, staff members are trained to invite residents gently, without pressure, respecting their autonomy while encouraging engagement.
Family: The Most Important Partner in Care
Families are an essential part of the process, and The Moments welcomes their involvement. Some families help during the initial transition period, assisting with things like medication routines, dressing, or showers. We encourage families to be present if those tasks cause anxiety in a new environment for their loved one.
“Sometimes just having a familiar face can ease that stress,” Elizabeth says. “We partner with families to make the process smoother.”
Beyond care routines, The Moments also emphasizes family involvement in everyday life. Monthly newsletters, website calendar updates, group texts, and printed calendars at the front desk ensure that families always know what’s going on and when to join for some fun activities.
From outdoor barbecues to the annual petting zoo, events are designed to include residents and their loved ones of all ages. “We want to make these moments feel like home, like community,” she adds.
Staff Training That Goes Beyond the Basics
At The Moments, we prioritize specialized, direct care for your family member, exclusively provided by Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs). Our commitment to training extends far beyond initial certification.
Elizabeth emphasizes, “Our CNAs receive dementia-specific education and monthly skills sessions. We use real-time issues and feedback to guide that training.” This ensures continuous improvement and responsiveness to the evolving needs of our residents.
Only CNAs are permitted to serve as direct caregivers, meaning individuals cannot simply join our team without this crucial certification. This rigorous standard ensures that the person most likely to care for your loved one possesses a foundational understanding of nursing care.
Beyond initial training, our CNAs receive ongoing dementia-specific education from us, coupled with continuous monthly skills training. All CNAs are required to attend an hour-long training session led by our former assistant director of nursing, who is passionate about education. These sessions typically dedicate 30 to 45 minutes to training a specific skill or addressing issues that have arisen in the preceding month.
Our comprehensive training approach extends to all team members, including culinary and front desk staff, who undergo dementia training before interacting with residents. Every team member receives a minimum of 15 hours of instruction before they begin working on the floor, guaranteeing a thorough understanding of the emotional and physical nuances inherent in memory care.

Leading, Not Following, the Trends
When asked how she keeps up with the latest innovations, Elizabeth jokes: “TikTok. Just kidding, we set the trends.”
From the very beginning, she wanted The Moments to flip the standard model on its head. “Traditional memory care often feels like an afterthought – down a hall, away from everything,” she explains. “We wanted to build something different. Something better.”
The community’s design is forward-thinking, both in architecture and technology. But technology is only embraced if it truly enhances resident life.
“We have lots of tech here but the goal is that you don’t notice it,” Elizabeth says. “It’s integrated in a way that doesn’t interfere with daily life.”
From door access systems to subtle monitoring tools, every technological choice is made with the resident’s dignity and comfort in mind.
Planning for the Boomer Generation
The Moments is already thinking about the next generation of residents: the boomers. And many of them are tech-savvy.
“We have residents now who use iPads, iPhones, even Apple Watches,” Elizabeth shares. “As more boomers arrive, we’re incorporating tech into life enrichment too, like using smartphones for photography or creative expression.”
By planning ahead, The Moments ensures it continues to meet the evolving needs of its residents without losing sight of its core values of love, care, and connection.
Memory care is more than meeting medical needs it is about preserving each resident’s identity, honoring their history, and creating new opportunities for joy.
