The Moments Men’s Group: Camaraderie, Connection, and Shared Experiences

At The Moments, every resident has a unique story, background, and set of interests that make them who they are. While memory care often focuses on engagement through music, art, and social activities, we recognize that fostering a sense of camaraderie and belonging is just as important—especially for our male residents. That’s why we created The Moments Men’s Group, a dedicated gathering where men in our community can come together, share experiences, and enjoy time spent in the company of their peers.

A Place for Connection and Conversation

For many men, life was once filled with routines of work, hobbies, friendships, and social gatherings. Retirement and aging can sometimes shift those routines, and dementia can make it even harder to maintain strong social ties. The Moments Men’s Group was designed to bring back that sense of connection, offering a space where residents can relax, engage in meaningful conversation, and build friendships with others who share common interests.

The group meets regularly in a relaxed, welcoming setting where conversations flow naturally. Topics might include sports, classic cars, past careers, family life, or even memories of their favorite weekend hobbies. Whether it’s reminiscing about the “good old days” or discussing shared experiences, the group provides an outlet for storytelling, reflection, and laughter.

Activities Tailored to Shared Interests

While conversation is a big part of the group, activities are just as important. The Moments Men’s Group engages residents in hands-on experiences that align with their interests and past experiences. Some of these include:

  • Sports discussions and game day gatherings – Watching a classic baseball game or chatting about favorite teams
  • Tool time and woodworking – Handling and discussing tools, sharing stories of past projects, and even working on small, hands-on activities
  • Outdoor leisure – Sitting together on the patio, enjoying fresh air, and sharing fishing or camping stories
  • History and military discussions – Talking about past experiences in the service, historical events, or sharing old photographs
  • Cards, dominoes, and friendly competition – A casual game of cards or dominoes to keep the mind engaged and the conversation flowing

By incorporating familiar activities, we create an environment that feels natural and comfortable, encouraging participation even for those who may be hesitant to engage in larger group settings.

The Power of Brotherhood and Belonging

For men living with dementia, having a sense of purpose and belonging is just as important as physical care. The Moments Men’s Group offers a space where residents can feel understood and appreciated, where they can talk, listen, and share without pressure. Many residents who participate in the group express how much they look forward to these gatherings, appreciating the companionship and routine it provides.

Caregivers also play a role, not just by facilitating discussions and activities, but by learning about each resident’s past experiences and helping to tailor conversations and events that resonate with them. These small, thoughtful details make each meeting feel personal, engaging, and meaningful.

A Special Space for Meaningful Moments

The Moments Men’s Group is more than just an activity—it’s a brotherhood built on shared experiences, respect, and friendship. Whether it’s swapping stories over coffee, enjoying a game of cards, or simply sitting in quiet companionship, these gatherings help create a sense of normalcy, belonging, and joy for the men in our community.
